Books About Writing and Editing

Books about writing cannot provide a single formula for becoming a writer. They can, however, offer practical guidance, new ways of thinking and reassurance that uncertainty is part of the process.

This is a small, curated selection of books that explore storytelling, language and the craft of writing.

A useful writing book should not tell you what your voice ought to be. It should help you understand and develop the voice you already have.

On Writing

On Writing — Stephen King

Part memoir and part practical guide, this book explores the habits, discipline and persistence involved in becoming a writer. King combines personal experience with clear advice about language, storytelling and the importance of reading.

The Science of Storytelling

The Science of Storytelling — Will Storr

Will Storr examines why human beings are drawn to stories and how character, conflict and perception influence the way a narrative is understood. It is particularly useful for writers interested in what makes characters believable and stories compelling.

Bird by Bird

Bird by Bird — Anne Lamott

A warm and honest account of the writing process. Anne Lamott discusses uncertainty, perfectionism and persistence, encouraging writers to approach large projects gradually rather than trying to solve everything at once.

Steering the Craft

Steering the Craft — Ursula K. Le Guin

A practical guide to narrative technique, with particular attention to language, rhythm, voice, sentence construction and point of view. It encourages writers to understand how their choices affect the movement and tone of a story.

This list will continue to grow, but it will remain selective: books included here should offer something genuinely useful to writers and editors.
